Shell: Shell World UK Magazine

 Vision & Values

 Design for print

“It has become our flagship publication across the group, which our other publications often look to for inspiration”

(Head of Shell Creative Services)

The Challenge: We inherited the well established Shell World UK (quarterly) magazine and were tasked to provide continuity and design improvements, as well as refining processes to reduce environmental impact.

The Diagnosis: A redesign was essential, primarily because with each issue the content was increasing, leaving less room for attractive design features and spacious spreads. The other driving factor (in recognition of subscriber feedback) was the need to modernise and raise the quality of the publication.

The Creative solution: We increased the format to an oversized A4, providing more breathing space for the content. A unique, modern and fresh graphic language was introduced along with more dynamic layouts. Finally, we switched to 100% recycled uncoated paper stock which backed the environmental message and again raised quality.

The Results: Coupled with a promotional push the magazine added a further 1000+ subscribers within a few months of its redesign. The magazine has continued to develop with each issue and picked up an Institute of Internal Communications excellence award in March 2011. Not to mention receiving numerous accolades from senior staff within Shell and external audiences.
